How to store a retainer so it does not get lost or broken

The case rule

Every time the retainer is out — meals, sports, sleep off-nights — it goes in a hard case. Napkins and pockets are the #1 way retainers end up in the trash or the wash.

Pick the right case

• Hard shell (not a soft pouch) so it cannot be crushed in a bag.
• Vented or easy to open so the retainer can dry.
• A bright color is easier to spot on a restaurant table.
• Keep a spare case in your bag or car console (not on the dashboard).

Keep it away from

• Pets — dogs especially love to chew retainers. Store the case up high or in a drawer.
• Heat — hot cars, window sills, near stoves or hair dryers.
• Little kids and anywhere it could be sat on or stepped on.

Traveling

• Pack it in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
• Bring the cleaning tablets you use at home so you are not tempted to use hot water or harsh soaks.

Lost or chewed?
