How to Keep Your Retainer Safe (and Out of the Trash)
Most retainers aren't worn out. They get lost or broken while they're out of your mouth. A handful of habits prevents almost all of it. Here they are, plus what to do if yours breaks anyway.
1. The case rule: every time, no exceptions
Whenever the retainer comes out, for meals, sports, or a quick snack, it goes straight into a hard case. Not a pocket, a pouch, or a tissue. A hard case protects it from being crushed in a bag and makes it easy to find.
- Choose a bright-colored, vented hard case so it's easy to spot on a table and the retainer can dry.
- Keep a spare case in a backpack, purse, or car console (not on the dashboard).

2. Avoid the napkin trap
Wrapping a retainer in a napkin at a restaurant or school lunch is the most common way it gets lost. The napkin goes on the tray, the tray goes in the trash, and the retainer goes with it. If there's no case handy, leave it in your mouth until you can get one, or put it somewhere you won't forget, like next to your phone.
3. Keep it away from pets
Dogs especially are drawn to retainers. A retainer on a nightstand or in an open bag at dog height is an easy target.
- Close the latch on the case, and store it up high or in a closed drawer.
- Don't leave bags with a retainer inside on the floor.

4. Keep it away from heat
Heat can warp acrylic so it no longer fits, and a warped retainer usually can't be repaired.
- No hot or boiling water, and no dishwasher. Clean with cool or lukewarm water — see how to clean a retainer.
- Don't leave it in a hot car, on a window sill, or near a stove or hair dryer.
5. Handle it gently
- Take it out by easing it from both sides evenly, not by flicking one side or pulling on the front wire.
- Clean it over a towel or a sink with water in it, so a drop doesn't crack the plate.
- Don't chew on it or click it in and out. That stresses clasps and wires.
6. Tips for parents of kids and teens
- Put a case in the lunchbox or backpack and make "case it" part of the lunch routine.
- Pick a case color that is easy to spot and label it with a phone number.
- Set one home spot for the case, like the bathroom shelf, and keep it out of the dog's reach.
- Pack it in a carry-on when traveling, never in checked luggage.
