Cracked Acrylic Retainer Repair by Mail

A crack in the pink or colored plate of a Hawley or acrylic retainer is one of the most common repairs we see. Many cracks, and even plates that have split in two, can be repaired as long as the pieces are kept. Here is how to tell and what to do.

What to do right away

  1. Stop wearing it if the crack goes all the way through, the edge is sharp, or the plate flexes when you press on it.
  2. Keep every piece, even small chips, in a hard case. Fragments help the lab line the plate back up.
  3. Don't glue it. Super glue and other household glues are not made for the mouth, and residue makes a clean repair harder.
  4. Keep it away from heat. Hot water, a dishwasher, or a hot car can warp acrylic and turn a repairable crack into a replacement.
  5. Take photos of the top, the bottom, and a close-up of the crack in good light.
  6. Check with your orthodontist or dentist about how long you can go without it, especially if your teeth feel like they are shifting.

Every retainer is different, so we confirm from your photos before you pay or ship. If a repair won't make sense, we'll tell you.

How cracks usually happen

  • Dropped on a bathroom floor or sink.
  • Stepped on or sat on after being left out of its case.
  • Chewed by a pet — see my dog chewed my retainer.
  • Heat from hot water or a hot car, which weakens and warps the acrylic.
  • Snapping it in and out from one side, which stresses the plate over time.

Most of these come down to case habits. Our guide to keeping a retainer safe covers the simple ones.

Hawley and acrylic retainers only

Our lab repairs removable Hawley and acrylic retainers (a hard acrylic plate, usually with wires). We do not repair clear aligners or clear plastic (Essix-style) retainers. If yours is a thin clear tray, please contact the provider who made it about a replacement.

Quick answers

Can a cracked acrylic retainer be repaired?

Often, yes. Hairline cracks, plates split in two, and broken-off pieces you still have can usually be repaired. We confirm from photos before you pay or ship.

Can I glue my cracked retainer?

No. Household glue is not made for use in the mouth and makes a proper repair harder. Keep the pieces in a hard case and send photos instead.

Is it safe to wear a cracked retainer?

Not if the crack goes all the way through, an edge is sharp, or it no longer fits. Ask your orthodontist or dentist how long you can safely go without it.

Do you repair cracked clear retainers?

No. Smile Extension does not repair clear aligners or clear plastic retainers. We repair Hawley and acrylic retainers only.

How much does a cracked acrylic retainer repair cost?

Repair packages include prepaid UPS shipping both ways and run from $99.35 to $155, depending on shipping speed. Lab turnaround is 10–12 days.
