Retainer Repair Cost vs Replacement
When a Hawley or acrylic retainer breaks, the first question is usually cost. A new retainer often costs $200 or more. A repair costs less and lets you keep the retainer that already fits your teeth. Here is how the numbers compare.

What a replacement usually costs
Replacement retainers are made by your dental office, and prices vary by office, region, and retainer type. A replacement Hawley or acrylic retainer often costs $200 or more, and it may include a new scan or impression and a fitting visit. Ask your provider for their price. It's the only way to compare accurately.
Why repair often makes sense
- Lower cost. Most repairs come in well under what a replacement often costs, with shipping both ways already included.
- Keep the retainer that already fits. A repaired retainer is the same appliance your teeth are used to.
- No appointment for the repair itself. Everything happens by mail, nationwide.
- Photo check first. We confirm whether it's repairable before you pay or ship anything.
When a replacement is the better choice
- The retainer is lost, or large parts are missing — see lost or chewed retainer.
- It's warped by heat or crushed so it no longer seats.
- It no longer fits even before it broke. That can mean your teeth have shifted. A repair can't fix that, so see your orthodontist or dentist.
- It's a clear aligner or clear plastic (Essix-style) retainer. We do not repair these. Contact the provider who made it.
- It's a bonded (permanent) retainer, which has to be fixed in person — see bonded retainers.
